What Are You Doing to Protect Yourself From the Flu? | AFC Chamblee

Flu activity in Georgia has been on the rise over the last few months. And it’s not going away anytime soon. That’s why our team at AFC Chamblee wants to offer your family some suggestions on how to fend off the flu!

Stay Ahead of the Flu

First things first, get the flu vaccine. It’s not too late, since flu season generally lasts through the month of March and can linger as long as May. Even if you get a strain of the flu that’s not covered in this year’s vaccine, the flu vaccine will shorten the duration of the flu and its severity.

The flu shot isn’t the only way to protect your health, though. Let’s take a look at some other preventive to-dos.

First, wash your hands as frequently as possible. Because the weather is cold and we’re stuck indoors with the windows and doors closed, germs stick around longer. Wash your hands regularly, including after touching commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs, light switches and phones. Soap and water are best, but alcohol-based hand sanitizer can do in a pinch.

Second, be careful to not touch your face. Have you ever thought about how many germs access our bodies through our eyes, mouth and nose? That’s why it’s especially important during flu season to be careful not to touch your face unless you’ve just washed your hands.

Finally, disinfect everything you can. We talked about some commonly touched surfaces above. Those are a good starting place when it comes to disinfecting. In an office, you may also want to clean printers, copiers, water dispensers, projection screens, and so on. At home, appliances (like the refrigerator door) and bathrooms should be cleaned frequently.
