Keep Your Eye on Safety This Sports Season | AFC Chamblee

Did you know that sports participation is the most common reason for eye injuries in our children? During Sports Eye Safety Month this April, our team at AFC Chamblee wants to offer some tips on how to keep your young athlete’s eye health a priority this sports season—on and off the field.

Eye Health Tips for Spring

More than 90 percent of eye injuries are preventable if the proper eyewear is worn. Take the right precautions by following these steps to help avoid sports eye injuries now and in the future.

First, make sure your child wears the proper safety goggles for the sport her or she is playing.

For example, when it comes to basketball, you want to make sure your child wears lensed polycarbonate protectors that can help to guard eyesight from injury and are ASTM F803-approved. If eye goggles are marked as ASTM F803-approved, you know the eyewear was tested and is at the highest level of protection for your eyesight.

Second, helmets can also help to protect your child’s eyes while on in the field. For sports like baseball and hockey, helmets with polycarbonate face shields can help to protect eyesight when eyewear alone isn’t enough.

Finally, you also need to consider if the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays will become an issue when playing your child’s sport of choice. If he or she participates in baseball, soccer, tennis or any other sport that is played outside during peak sunlight hours, you’re going to want to protect your child’s eyesight from a sunburn by having him or her wear sunglasses with UV protection.

Remember, no matter what sport your young athlete plays, there is a potential for an eye injury.
